and something else too…

Melissa Alcantara: The Woman Who Inspired Kim Kardashian To Get In Shape

Meet the woman who inspired Kim Kardashian to get in “the best shape of her life”. Melissa Alcantara is a 32-year-old professional bodybuilder and personal trainer. After giving birth the transformation of her body has been nothing short of astounding.

Melissa gave birth to her daughter Isabella in 2011. She struggled to return her body to its pre-pregnancy state, but after trying and failing for two years, the New York native finally discovered the way to a body she had always dreamed of.

The mother-of-one created her own eight-week weight loss plan which includes a rigorous diet and fitness regime. Melissa’s weight had increased significantly after the birth of her daughter and she weighed 196 pounds. However, following her new program, she was left looking almost unrecognizable as she lost 62 pounds slimming down to 135 pounds, a big part of which was pure muscle. She was in perfect condition to take part in her first ever bodybuilding competition.

Melissa’s story was the inspiration behind Kim Kardashian getting into shape, after the reality star discovered the bodybuilder on Instagram.

Here is Melissa, still pregnant, in 2011:

And here she is, six years later, looking completely different:

She wasn’t the only one who got in shape, though.

Her husband Victor joined her on the journey to a toned body.

Melissa, who is currently living in Los Angeles, California, says that her pregnancy was “hard” and that she was always sick and hungry. All she wanted at that time was her normal body back, but in the end she managed to get “an even better body” than before.

It was a long and hard road the one that led her to her goal. The first two years of struggling without actually knowing what to do to lose weight were very difficult for Melissa.

“I ate low fat yogurt, skipped meals, ate salads, did detoxes, did cardio sometimes, what else was there to do? There had to be a trick someone wasn’t telling me,” she wrote on her Instagram page.

After a while, she finally realized that there was no easy way to achieve what she wanted, so she decided it was time for a change.

“I woke up one day so tired of being tired. I just didn’t want to feel the way I did anymore. I hated how I felt in my skin, I was tired all day. I ate crap I knew wasn’t good for me I had to make a change,” she told FEMAIL.

The bodybuilder, who now has a blue belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu, saw an infomercial for Insanity by Beachbody which inspired her to start working out. She lost 40 pounds in two months, and a few years later she became the star of the new Insanity Max 30 videos.

Her former diet was “crap,” Melissa admits, adding that she ate out or ordered in for almost every meal. Nowadays, her diet has been changed dramatically. Gone are the fast food and the feel-good food, replaced by fresh, whole foods. Melissa often Instagrams her meals. and some of the photos she posts are of truly delicious-looking dishes, such as overnight oats with chia seeds, frozen fruits and fresh coconut, and homemade vegan, gluten and dairy-free chocolate brownies with no added sugar.

“Rewarding yourself with a protein bar or pizza after every salad you have will never give you the results you want,” Melissa explained.

While before she used to consume over 2500 calories “crappy fried or processed foods” per day, today Melissa eats 1700-1900 calories full of nutrients.

This is how she described her diet: “I rarely eat processed foods or foods that contain much sugar, I rarely have dairy, no butter, no fried foods. I occasionally go out to eat and have my burger (gourmet) or usually made at home or have my occasional beer or cocktail. I only drink water every day or coffee but I don’t drink soda or sugary juice drinks. I eat balanced meals that contain protein, carbs and good, healthy fats and veggies for micronutrients. I take my supplements every day, an array of vitamins, probiotics, and fish oil.”

Another important part of the whole regime is exercise. Melissa works out for about one and a half hours, six days a week. Her healthy attitude to fitness can motivate even the laziest of people to start taking care of their bodies. And in today’s frenetic and chaotic way of life, taking care of ourselves is the one thing we mustn’t forget to do.

“It’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life and forget about yourself. The recipe for motivation is within you, it starts with being really f**king tired of not being the person you want to be then one day you say enough is enough and you change your life,” Melissa advised.

“You start to wake up at 5am even though you just want to sleep, three weeks go by and it’s not so bad, you start to work out at 6am even though you don’t know exactly what you’re doing but three weeks later you start to feel like a pro, you start to eat oatmeal instead of fruit loops because you read somewhere that oatmeal is better than fruit loops,” she continued.

But in the beginning it’s very important to start simple, the 32-year-old revealed. If you start by doing something too complicated, you won’t be able to continue.

“Change is hard, no one likes it, it’s not comfortable so don’t try to make it comfortable because the joy of change is the struggle.”

Her fitness program, Melissa’s 8-Week Body Sculptor, has achieved a nationwide success after Kim Kardashian employed the bodybuilder’s help to achieve a fitter body.

Melissa even had a guest appearance on Keeping Up With The Kardashians, where she recounted her journey to sisters Kim and Khloe.

In the same episode, Kim made the decision to change her lifestyle by leaving the junk food out of her diet, and making sure she eats a lot healthier.

“I’m going to start a really crazy diet. I was looking on Instagram and this body builder popped up on my page and she had gained 70 pounds in her pregnancy. Her kid’s like six now. She is like ripped,” Kim told her mother Kris Jenner.

“Melissa is a trainer I found. She’s super inspiring to me and I really want to meet up with her and she if she could train me. She could help direct my food and really get me on an amazing path… If I was 10 percent like her it would be life-changing. Like my whole arms and back. It’s mostly food. I gotta have this lifestyle. I gotta try,” she added.

When, later in the episode, Kim and Melissa were working out together, doing squats, lunges, and weights, Kim even admitted that she was suddenly inspired to get abs.

“I’ve never been pushed to get them, but I know I could,” the 37-year-old star told her new trainer.

Kim chanced upon Melissa by accident, but that is not to say that the bodybuilder’s rise to the top hasn’t been a bumpy ride.

Melissa worked as a marketing assistant with a salary of $50,000 a year, but she left it in 2012 to pursue her desire to work as a production intern, even if the pay was only $7.50 an hour. “That’s what I wanted to do,” she explains her decision. Later, in 2015, she was making $60,000 a year as a photography producer, but she left this job as well. She wanted to focus on her fitness more, so she took a job as a hostess instead with a salary of $13 an hour.

She created her fitness program, Melissa’s 8-Week Body Sculptor, in 2016, and won her first bodybuilding competition in 2017.

“I want to post this so everyone knows there’s a struggle behind most success stories! I’ve had a couple of transformations but this is by far craziest one. For anyone who wants to follow their dreams, who wants to do what they love, TAKE RISKS!! Get out of your comfort zone and do something for you! You never know what could happen,” she advised.
